Essay on the coke advert!

The advert starts with two men marching in opposite directions on either side of a metal, striped barrier. It also uses a wide long shot in the beginning; this creates a good shot as it immediately shows the audience the setting which is in an abandoned, hot, dry desert. The men seem to be in the military as they are wearing some sort of militant uniform which looks quite dated, also they have very big mustaches which also suggests that they are from a past time. However there is a satellite dish in the middle of the desert which doesn't quite link with the costumes the two men are wearing, this may suggest that coke has been very successful in the past as well as the future and might 'open happiness' in both periods of time. There is a shot which clearly shows how dusty and sweaty their clothes and faces are, this means that the two have been marching continuously for a very long time in a hot and dry area and their faces look very grumpy which could mean that their job is very boring.  They seem to be looking at each other in a way two enemies would look at one another which suggests that they are against each other in some sort of war between two countries. The barrier in between also shows that it is a borderline between two countries and each of the soldiers are guarding their side of the borderline.

Then a wrapper flies across the ground and lands onto one of the mans side (over the barrier) He then gives a very stern look to his enemy and aggressively pierces the wrapper with his sword and throws it onto the other side, this shows hostility towards his side of the land and how he does not like something from the other land to touch his grounds.

The two soldiers carry on marching in opposite directions and out of the blue you hear the sound of when you open a bottle lid. The man with the grey/blue uniform on  stops as soon as he hears the sound of the bottle opening and their is as sudden look of hope on his face and the stern look just melts away into mid air.The shot after that actually gives you a clear hint of what the clip is advertising about as the man in the red uniform takes a sip out of a glass bottle and the label of the product is clearly advertised as it is facing the audience 'coca cola'. As he drinks the coke his eyes are closed and his head is tilted back, this is suggesting that the coke tastes really nice and it is refreshing and gives a sense of relaxation as he drinks it.It has clearly shown that he took the bottle out of a ice box which then again is an item from the future.

After the soldier in the red uniform drinks the coke he smiles which shows he enjoyed the drink but as he turns to look at the other soldier in a grey/blue uniform,he sees that the man in the grey uniform looks sad and upset that he does not have coke and the music changes from a brave piece to a sad piece where violins are playing, this instrument is usually played at a depressing  event to express the emotion sadness.

The man in the red uniform then turns back to get another bottle from the ice box and hands it to the soldier in the grey/blue uniform but before he took it he looked around to see if anyone was looking which shows he knows he is doing a bad thing but has a temptation of coke, this also suggests that coke is good enough to break rules. As the man in the red tries to hand it to the man in the grey he notices that he cant just hand it to him so easily, so he looks around to double check if anyone is there and puts the coke bottle  onto the ground, he then pulls his sword out in a very sudden and quick movement that his enemy jumps up with fright which shows he has fear of him.

The man in the red then draws a semi circle around the line that separates the two lands with his sword and rubs out the separation line this makes the deal fair so he can actually deliver his bottle without having to actually go across the border line. The man in the grey then moves his eyeballs left to right to check if anyone is there again, this shows that he definitely knows it is wrong. He then bends over to pick the bottle up and the two drink their own bottles and the man with the grey looks at the bottle and smiles at it and also smiles at the soldier in the red. The music goes louder which shows pride between the two. Then the the two remember what they have done and their smiles fade away from their faces and the music stops too. The music then  starts again and they walk in opposite directions with one of them re introducing the border line by dragging their sword along the sand. The whole point of the advert shows that coke brings happiness to people and can even make enemies friends for a short amount of time.

  1. Excellent, thoughtful work. You have detailed many examples, moved successfully from denotation to connotations and discussed how the message is conveyed through the positive representation of the product.

    Well done.
